Parallel parking

You will likely be asked to park on the road test. 18 inches from the curb is the target.

  1. 1Line upSignal right. Pull even with the front car, about 2 feet away. Stop when your mirrors match.
  2. 2Back and crank rightReverse slowly. When your rear bumper clears the other car’s rear, turn the wheel all the way right.
  3. 3Straighten, then leftWhen your front bumper clears the other car’s rear, turn the wheel all the way left and continue back.
  4. 4CenterStraighten the wheels. Finish within 18 inches of the curb, centered in the space. Parking brake on.

What the examiner wants

  • No contact with other cars or the curb (a light kiss of the tire is often forgiven; a hit is not)
  • Within 18 inches of the curb
  • Control — slow, looking back
  • Signal and check traffic as you leave
