Your license path

Oklahoma splits teens and adults. Pick your track, then check off each gate. Fees and rules follow Service Oklahoma’s published numbers.

1. Step 1Confirm you are eligibleLearner permit: 15 with approved driver education, or 16 without. Intermediate: 16 with driver ed (permit held 180 days) or 16½ without. Full Class D: 18, or after you complete GDL time.
2. Step 2Study this handbookEvery written-test question is drawn from the Oklahoma Driver Manual. Work the chapters here, then sit a 20-question exam until you can clear 15 without guessing.
3. Step 3Gather documentsPrimary ID (certified birth certificate or unexpired U.S. passport), Social Security number, and — if you will drive-test — proof of liability insurance. Teens: driver education certificate or parent-taught affidavit plus Work Zone Safe for the intermediate license. Name-change papers if your ID does not match.
4. Step 4Pass the vision screeningClass D needs 20/60 in both eyes, or 20/50 in one eye, with or without lenses. If you need glasses, you will get a restriction and must wear them whenever you drive.
5. Step 5Pass the written test20 questions, 15 to pass, 60 minutes. Available online through Service Oklahoma’s testing partner or in person. A fail adds $4 when the card is issued. You may retest as soon as the next business day.
6. Step 6Get the learner permitDrive only 5 a.m.–10 p.m. with a licensed driver 21 or older in the front seat. Practice the skills in this app: stops, lane changes, parking, three-point turns. Teens must hold the permit 180 days before the intermediate license.
7. Step 7Practice (optional permit)At 18+ you may take the driving test as soon as the next business day. If you want more practice, get a permit and drive with a 21+ licensed rider until the car feels boring.
8. Step 8Bring a legal test carCurrent tag, insurance, working lights/horn/brakes/belts, tires with tread. The examiner will not take a unsafe car on the road.
9. Step 9Pass the driving testExpect a mix of residential streets and busier roads: full stops, turns, lane changes, backing, parking, and observation. Three attempts after you become eligible; after that, once every 30 days. Teens: after three fails you must hold a permit 30 days before another try.
10. Step 10Drive the GDL rulesIntermediate license: 5 a.m.–10 p.m. (work/school/church or a 21+ rider are the exceptions). One passenger unless they live with you or a 21+ licensed driver is beside you. Restriction can lift after 6 months with driver ed, or 1 year without. A moving-violation conviction adds 6 months at your current level.
11. Step 11Pay and pick up the licenseOriginal Class D is $42.50 for four years or $81.00 for eight. Add REAL ID documents if you want the star for air travel. Carry the card. Keep insurance in the car.
