Handbook skill
Night, rain, and wind
The written exam loves headlights, hydroplaning, and “too fast for conditions.”
- 1LightsOn from 30 minutes after sunset to 30 minutes before sunrise. Low beams in fog and heavy rain. Dim high beams at 1,000 ft oncoming, 600 ft following.
- 2RainThe first minutes are the slickest. Add a fourth following second. If you hydroplane, ease off the gas.
- 3WindOpen plains and overpasses catch high-profile vehicles. Both hands on the wheel; expect a shove when you pass a truck.
- 4IceBridges freeze first. No sudden anything. Off the brake, steer into a skid.
What the examiner wants
- You will not test at night, but you will be asked these rules on the written exam
