Handbook skill
Skids, blowouts, and brakes
Handbook Chapter 8 and 11 both test this. Panic is the real hazard.
- 1SkidFoot off the brake and gas. Steer where you want the front to go (into the skid). Don’t overcorrect.
- 2BlowoutGrip the wheel, ease off the gas, brake gently once you have control. Pull off when it is safe.
- 3Off the pavementHold firm, ease off, slow, then ease back on at a shallow angle when the road is clear.
- 4ABS vs no ABSABS: press hard and steer. No ABS: threshold brake — maximum pressure just before lockup.
What the examiner wants
- Know the words: steer into the skid, don’t pump ABS, don’t jerk back onto the road
