Chapter 2 · License

Restrictions and Renewals

Restriction codes, renewals, lost licenses, and unauthorized driving.

Your driving privilege

Oklahoma can restrict a license so you only drive under conditions that keep you and others safe. Common codes include B (corrective lenses), automatic transmission, daylight-only, and GDL/intermediate limits. Driving in violation of a restriction is treated like driving without a valid license.

Renewal, replacement, and name or address

Licenses are issued for four or eight years. You may renew up to one year early. If your Oklahoma license or ID has been expired more than one year, bring a primary identification document. Report a name change to the Social Security Administration first, then bring certified court, marriage, or divorce papers. Titles and ecclesiastical names are not printed on licenses.

If you lose the card, apply for a replacement with primary ID. Keep Service Oklahoma updated when you move — they must be able to reach you.

Under 18

A license issued to someone under 18 is probationary. Service Oklahoma can cancel it for unlawful acts. Parents who sign for a teen also accept financial and legal responsibility while that consent is in force.
