Chapter 3 · License
Insurance, Seat Belts, Child Seats
Compulsory liability, tags, belts, and Oklahoma child-restraint rules.
You must be insured
Oklahoma requires liability insurance before you drive. Minimum limits are $25,000 bodily injury per person, $50,000 bodily injury per accident, and $25,000 property damage (25/50/25). Carry proof — a security verification form — and show it when you test, if you are stopped, or after a crash.
No insurance, or a crash with $500 or more in damage or any injury without coverage, can suspend your license and registration. Penalties include a fine up to $250 and up to 30 days in jail.
- Bodily injury
- $25,000 / $50,000
- Property damage
- $25,000
- Uninsured crash
- Possible suspension if damage ≥ $500
Seat belts
The driver and front-seat passenger must wear a properly fastened factory-installed seat belt that meets federal standards. Belts save lives in the crashes Oklahoma sees most — short trips at moderate speeds included.
Child passenger restraints
Children under 8 must ride in a child passenger restraint system. Use a rear-facing seat until the child is 2 years old or until they outgrow the manufacturer’s rear-facing height or weight limit. Follow the seat’s labels and the vehicle manual for installation — usually in the back seat, never in front of an active passenger airbag.
